Chapter 19

COLE

I woke, squinting against the soft morning light that filtered into the hotel room around the far edge of the curtain. My head ached, fuzzy from too much drinking. But as my vision cleared, my breath hitched. Ava slept beside me. Her face loomed inches from mine. Fuck! Our arms and legs were tangled together. The crisp, white hotel sheet was a twisted, knotted mass draped over our waists. Last night flashed before my eyes. The party. Dancing. Rushing back here. Fucking her senseless.

The whole room smelled of sex . . . and Ava. Shit! How many times did I make her come? By the door, on the bed, during sex, and in the shower . . . Damn. That had been a good night.

But the dull ache in my head turned into a pounding hammer. Nausea loomed low in my gut. How could I have been so reckless? I covered my eyes with my arm. I’d done some stupid things in my time but sleeping with my bodyguard was a new level of crazy even for me. This wasn’t good. Another huge mistake. But why did she make me feel things I didn’t want to feel? That pull, that draw, that burn to be with her had to stop. The last time I’d fallen for someone, my heart had been obliterated. That was not a path I wanted to venture down again.

That wasn’t what this was, was it?

My blood pressure crept higher and higher. My temples thudded and throbbed. No . . . definitely not.

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. As I swept my gaze over Ava’s sexy mass of wavy hair, the three dark freckles that formed a perfect triangle on her cheek, and the swollen lips I’d kissed until I could barely breathe, the tightness in my chest dissipated. What was it about her that made me want more? I wanted more . . . but couldn’t have it. Not ever. I had nothing to offer her. Nothing more than a hot night between the sheets. My life was music and travel, women and parties. Her life was Josh. It was ludicrous to contemplate this going beyond one night. I’d only end up hurting and disappointing her. Fucking up like always.

Ava deserved to be with someone better than me.

The sooner I killed my feelings for her, the better. I had the tour and Charlotte to focus on . . . not Ava.

She wriggled and stretched beside me, giving me a damn good eyeful of her gorgeous naked tits. Her lazy, sleepy smile nearly had me coming undone.

But then she opened her eyes. Wild panic flashed and flared in their brown depths.

“Oh, shit.” She sat upright and drew the sheet over her chest. “You’ve got to get out of here. Now.”

There’s a blow to the ball sack. Ignoring the low twang in my chest, I summoned a playful smile. I wasn’t kicked out of bed very often. I agreed with her, I did have to go, but I wasn’t an asshole.
